Here we go

I have never had to create a blog for a course but it makes sense that for a course about integrating technology into education I would need to.

I am a little overwhelmed by the layout of the course in that it does not follow a more traditional model where you read a chapter and then respond to it and then repeat that pattern.

However, I am energized to learn more. I found the initial video, 'Pay Attention', illuminating. Particularly the quote from a high school student saying they had learned to "Play School". I feel that this is a very strong sentiment that should scare teachers. If a student is able to look at a course and realize they can simply study hard for one or two days and then coast you are teaching them poor life skills.

Dede's article helped to point out that while there is an awareness to switch how students are taught and there is an understanding of how to do it, the difficulty comes from accepting that a seismic shift needs to be made in education. Part of the problem with that shift is it can be harder to assess student ability in using 21st Century Skills.

I wholeheartedly agree that the use of technology in the classroom is necessary to help prepare students for the future. There is so much information being produced that students need to be taught to adequately filter through the information and be mindful of the reasons why that information is being produced and aimed at them.

As a random note, I am wondering how much in the future English teachers will focus on spelling and specific grammar notes. I say this because as I am writing this I have Grammarly working behind the scenes to check that my basic spellings and grammar are correct and wonder if over time a more powerful program will be created to assist students.
